Working from the home is a dream that many people have. When someone is younger, they want to work from the home for the freedom it brings to be with their family. When someone is older, that same desire for freedom is there. There is an additional twist. When someone is older, working from the home may be the only thing he or she is capable of doing. It may no longer be possible to work an 8 - 5 routine on a regular basis. And, it may be entirely necessary to find additional income because a partner has died, social security is not enough to live on, or the value of investments has been reduced.
What are some of the obstacles to an older person to finding work from home? One obstacle is that of technology. The younger generation is into cell phones and iPads. Internet businesses are springing up all over. Blogging is a natural and normal thing to do in today's world, as is having a Facebook page or Tweeting on Twitter. There are all sorts of other social media networks as well. But what about the older person who was raised without all that technology? It can be intimidating, and downright disheartening to them to think of attempting to learn it all. An older, retired person simply may not have the skills to work with all these new technologies. That makes it very difficult to find something suitable from the home.
Then there is the issue of networking. While there are companies out there, network marketing companies, that say that virtually "anyone can do this", the fact is, the average over sixty person does not want to spend his or her days going to friends and family pushing some sort of vitamin, cream, or lotion. It is a rare older person who wants to network to the degree that is required in network marketing.
Then there is the feasibility of whatever activity is involved. An older person may not have the strength or coordination of younger years, so that fact has to be taken into consideration. Is whatever the work-at-home opportunity is, something that can be done by the individual himself or herself? By sixty and above, some people have health issues so whatever is required needs to be flexible enough to accommodate those situations.
Finally, there is the cost. It has to be affordable for those who are on social security. Many retirees live off of social security as a major form of income Does the opportunity fall within the financial range of what the retiree can do?
If a retired person can overcome all of these obstacles, he or she has a good chance of making a viable living online. Yes, it is possible, but it requires effort and discernment to find the right opportunity. If the retired person can make it past the obstacle course presented to senior citizens, then yes, it is possible to work from home.
